Energising Queenstown is a collaboration between Transpower, Aurora Energy and PowerNet, working together to support the region’s transition to a more electrified, low-emissions future.
As Queenstown grows, so does demand for electricity. While solar, batteries and smart technology will play an important role, they won’t be enough on their own to meet future demand.
That’s why we’re investigating how to ensure the region has a modern, resilient electricity system — including bringing more electricity into the region to support homes, businesses and new developments.
Supporting Future Demand Through a New Transmission Line
Following detailed analysis and public consultation, a preferred option has been identified for further investigation: a new 110kV transmission line between Cromwell and Queenstown, along with a new substation at Arrow Junction.
This infrastructure would provide capacity for significant growth — supporting thousands of additional homes and businesses as the region continues to electrify.
The project is currently in the investigation phase, which includes technical studies, environmental assessments, and ongoing engagement with local communities and stakeholders.
– mid 2027
Option chosen
Choose a new Cromwell–Queenstown 110 kV transmission line for further investigation.
Investigation underway
Engage experts to start investigation to determine a preferred transmission line route and substation site.
Consultation
Share preferred transmission line route and substation site with residents, councils, mana whenua, local business and community groups and seek feedback.
Decide final route and site
Decide on transmission line route and substation site based on investigation and community consultation.
Detailed discussions
Discuss detailed plans with affected landowners, complete technical designs and lodge consent applications.
Line build starts
Start building the transmission line. The build date will reflect the needs of the community based on electricity use and forecasts.
